Sounds like a pretty killer lunch - Thanks for posting the Taleb thoughts, great food for thought. I've posted a couple times on Taleb (and am also a DeVany acolyte).

I felt, implicit in the exchange regarding Taleb not watching/reading any of the MSM but frequenting blogs: while Modernity increases our exposure to 'extremistan,' the Internet as a leveling tool allows increased exposure to a form of Mediocristan: with the actual 'experts' easier to find and varied opinions easier to gather, we become less dependent (clump less) on just a few voices/opinions, decreasing the risk of our exposure to unwise guidance (as is often provided by the MSM).

Workin' on a post along these lines now, In part prompted by the thoughts posted here. Thank you again and enjoyed the read!

Best,
Brett

Rob, the same thinking, at least for vacation purposes, took us to Exmoor in a tent last year. No laptop or camper van, but that camper van culture sure has some appeal for us now.

When I was working in Fleet St my fellow editors (about 20) were on a global conference call discussing where we might arrange to meet for a face to face conference. As the list of possibilities grew with no agreement emerging, I suggested we all go individually to our preferred location and hold a conference call from there.

I think you were just a bit ahead of your time with the clustering camper van idea. Keep plugging it, and eventually like-minds will meet.

'I sat down in the Gaudi building at a party, and felt at home. It was like a cave. It was irregular, and we like some kind of irregularity.'

Bored with my home office and looking for stimulation for my writing, I had the idea of working in my camper van at different locations on Exmoor every day.

I thought that other home workers with camper vans might like the idea and we could meet up and find real world companionship in our clustered camper-vans while we worked virtuously and virtually world-wide.

The countryside was nice but my laptop kept discharging my leisure battery and incurring travel-to-work costs was an almost forgotten unpleasant experience.

Not much materialised in the way of other home-workers camper vans, either, despite my blogged appeals, but I did get the evil eye from three dedicated hill walkers, a National Parks Ranger and a rather nice rugged-looking stag :-(
