I've wondered about crab apples whether they only taste so bitter to us because our palates are now so accustomed to sweetness. I'll have to be brave and try some: my next culinary adventure since the offal experiment of a few weeks ago.

Having recently lost several trees and branches to storm wind and rains I can identify with your tree worries. One of our crab apple trees has a bumper crop every other year which always brings on a heavy loss of branches. This year is an off year for that one thankfully but we are keeping an eye on the other fruit laden trees which will now remind us of Glenn Miller!
