black swan jake

17Nov08

Jake Thackray’s Black Swan is about a pub and lost love. The opening verse is:-

Down at the Black Swan
We’ll go sing our love song
We’ll sit, we’ll booze
We’ve got nothing to lose
We’ve lost it all, lost it all.

Well, the last two lines speaks to our theme at least.

In the BBC documentary that I mentioned, one appealing observation made was that Jake had a preference for the nylon-string acoustic guitar over the steel, locating him more in that European folk tradition and away from the Anglo-Saxon (absent my long-lost Fender Telecaster, I console myself occasionally with a few arpeggios on such an instrument). Also, they said how fine his musical writing was. I’ll not disagree. And to prove again that YouTube, in the right hands, is not poisoning the culture, some good soul called Shaun Murray has arranged a medley of Thackray classics, demonstrating the quality of the music, independent of lyrics and author.
